“I really have never seen anything like this in my life.”

Those words don’t come out of Dr. Oz’s mouth often — and when they do, it isn’t good. On the new series “Surgeon Oz,” Dr. Oz takes viewers inside the life-and-death decisions he makes as a practicing heart surgeon. Though the public knows his TV persona on “The Dr. Oz Show” and his frequent “Oprah Winfrey Show” appearances, the talk show host leads another life outside of the public eye. Over the past three decades, Dr. Oz has continued his work as a heart surgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.

In the above video from the series premiere, Dr. Oz operates on Doris Corona, a new patient who has been suffering from shortness of breath. After viewing a scan, he sees that she has inflammation of a major heart valve. With this life-threatening condition, she needs immediate surgery.

“Doris’ operation to replace her heart valve is very, very risky,” Dr. Oz says. “The blood is backing up into her lungs — she’s literally suffocating, which could kill her on the table.”

During the high-risk surgery, Dr. Oz sees something he’s never seen before. A growth, possibly cancerous, has formed inside of Doris’ heart valve.

“I’m always concerned when I’m seeing something for the first time in my life, because I’ve done a lot of these [surgeries],” he says.
